How to apply for the NDIS
A step-by-step guide to checking your eligibility, applying to the NDIS and getting your first plan, with support from our team along the way.
Are you eligible for the NDIS?
The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) is a government-funded program that provides support and services to people with disability, giving them greater choice and control over the supports they receive. It is managed by the National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA).
To be eligible for the NDIS, you must generally:
- be under 65 at the time you apply
- be an Australian citizen, permanent resident or Protected Special Category Visa holder
- have a permanent and significant disability that affects your ability to take part in everyday activities.
If you are new to the scheme, our guide to how the NDIS works is a good place to start, and the official eligibility checklist is available at ndis.gov.au.
Applying for the NDIS: step by step
1. Check your eligibility
Start with the eligibility checklist on the NDIS website. It walks you through the age, residency and disability requirements so you know whether to apply.
2. Gather your evidence
Ask your treating professionals, such as your GP, specialists or allied health practitioners, for reports that describe your disability, confirm it is likely to be permanent, and explain how it affects your everyday activities. Current, detailed evidence gives your application the best chance of success.
3. Submit your access request
Apply to the NDIA by completing an access request, either over the phone or using the access request form, and attach your supporting evidence. The NDIA may contact you if more information is needed, and will write to you with its decision.
4. Prepare for your planning meeting
If your access request is approved, you will be invited to a planning meeting. Before you go, think about your goals, the supports you currently rely on, and what a typical day looks like. Your NDIS plan is built around your goals, support needs and circumstances, so this preparation really matters.
5. Plan approval, choose your providers
Once your plan is approved, you decide who delivers your supports. If you would like Rehoboth to be part of your support team, you can refer yourself or someone you support online, or simply give us a call.
